What Makes a Symphony Orchestra?
A symphony orchestra is a large classical ensemble of thirty or more musicians comprised into four instrumental sections: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Musicians in each instrumental section play a number of related instruments made of similar material and produce sound in a similar manner either through bowing, plucking, blowing air into, or striking their instrument. Together each instrumental section is able to produce a wide range of notes and musical sounds. A smaller orchestra ensemble with only one or a select few instruments in each section is referred to as a chamber orchestra.
